100 Years of Scouting
On February 8th, 1910, The Boy Scouts of America was founded, after Chicago publisher William D. Boyce observed the Boy Scouts during a visit to Great Britain. Boyce incorporated the BSA in the District of Columbia. Boyce, and with the help of attorney James West, then set about merging other scout groups into the organization, which received a charter by act of Congress in 1916.

Scout Sunday

On February 7th we will be celebrating Scout Sunday at the Grace Episcopal Church on Browns Ave. in Scottsville. Service begins at 11:00 am. Families are invited and encouraged to attend. Wear your full class A uniforms.
There will be a coffee hour following the service to celebrate 100 years of Scouting.

Boy Scout Klondike Derby 2010
We will be participating in the Black Creek District Klondike Derby at Mendon Ponds Park on Saturday, January 30th.
Please meet in the Legion parking lot before 8:00am for carpooling.

Please bring $7.00 to cover the Derby fee.

The Webelos II will be guests of the Troop (no fee).

The fee includes the entire program, lunch, and event patch.

This is an ALL DAY event, we will be back around 5:30pm. Please dress appropriately...(remember "C.O.L.D.") Avoid 100% cotton items. NO Blue jeans. Snow pants preferred. Wear at least two pairs of socks.

In addition,

Each Scout is responsible to provide the following items:

Winter Fun Weekend
Saturday, Jan. 16th and Sunday, Jan. 17th.
Meet at the Legion parking lot at 9:00am with all your gear. The Troop and guests will stay at Camp Czapranski in the hills of Dansville and spend Saturday enjoying the slopes of Swain Ski Resort. A fun activity is planned on Sunday.

Event runs from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. featuring White, Yellow, and Sprint #5 courses.
Bring a Silva Type III compass (you should already have one), your map & compass reading skills, and of course...Scout Spirit!

Your active participation will fulfill the last requirement needed to earn your First Class badge of rank. Scoutmaster conferences may be scheduled anytime after completing this requirement, with a First Class Board of Review tentatively scheduled for Monday, Sept. 21st.

Summer Fest is Coming!

Lunch- Barbecued chicken quarters, macaroni and cheese, Cole slaw, etc.;
Dinner- STEAKS, roasted potatoes, corn on the cob, tossed salad, etc. w/ Apple crisp and vanilla ice cream.

Breakfast: - Scrambled eggs w/ assorted leftovers.

All above meals are provided FREE, as well as a place to stay...Gannett Building, Trek Lodge, Cabin (if you're lucky), and of course...tents. If you have an RV or pop-up there is parking available (bring EXTRA long power cords for elec. hook up).

It has been my recent experience the mosquitoes have been more obnoxious than the black flies on this weekend. Come prepared with long sleeved clothing and DEET. Cee-Gars? Smoke 'em if you got 'em.

I've been going up for more than ten years now and I can honestly say it's a BLAST. It's a rare opportunity to join over 100 other adult volunteers in helping to get Massawepie ready for another jam-packed, fun-filled, camping season.

DUE TO THE WORKING NATURE OF BEAVER WEEKEND, YOUTH (younger than 18) ARE STRONGLY DISCOURAGED IN ATTENDING. We are doing this for THEIR benefit.

First Aid Merit Badge

We will have a special First Aid Merit Badge meeting on Thursday night, May 28th, 7:00pm at the Scottsville Volunteer Fire Department.

Our goal is to finish the final requirement needed to earn this important badge. I would encourage everyone to review the following and be prepared for some very hands-on training.

First Aid Merit Badge Requirement #3
Do the following:

Explain what action you should take for someone who shows signals of shock, for someone who shows signals of a heart attack, and for someone who shows signals of stroke.
Identify the conditions that must exist before performing CPR on a person. Then demonstrate proper technique in performing CPR using a training device approved by your counselor.
Explain the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Show the steps that need to be taken for someone suffering from a severe cut on the leg and on the wrist. Tell the dangers in the use of a tourniquet and the conditions under which its use is justified.
Explain when a bee sting could be life threatening and what action should be taken for prevention and for first aid.
Explain the symptoms of heatstroke and what action needs to be taken for first aid and for prevention.

Troop 140 Alumni Update

PFC Hellaby, son of Paula and Joseph Hellaby recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC. Mark successfully completed 12 weeks of training designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally.

Mark and his fellow recruits began their training each day at 4 a.m., by running three miles and performing calisthenics. In addition to the physical conditioning program, Mark spent numerous hours in classroom and field assignments, which included learning first aid, uniform regulations, combat water survival, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat and assorted weapons training. They performed close order drill and operated as a small infantry unit during field training.

Mark also received instructions on the Marine Corps' core values --- honor, courage and commitment, and what the words mean in guiding personal and professional conduct. Mark and fellow recruits ended the training phase with the Crucible, a 54 hour ordeal of intense field training exercises that tests every recruit mentally and physically. Mark graduated from Parris Island on March 27, 2009.

He is currently at Camp Geiger for 4 weeks of MCT (Marine combat training). On May 12th he will graduate and go directly to his MOS (Military Occupation Specialty) at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland where he will take classes to be a Towed Artillery Systems Technician.

Mark is a 2008 graduate of Wheatland Chili and a Troop 140 Eagle Scout.

Foodlink
Community Service

On Saturday morning, Sept. 6th, Scouts and adult volunteers from Troop 140 teamed up with students from the Urban/Suburban program to help inspect, sort, and pack surplus/damaged food items at Foodlink in Rochester.

Foodlink acts as a clearinghouse for food that would otherwise be wasted, distributing goods donated by food manufacturers and retailers to a network of 550 programs that feed the hungry.

Massawepie Tip of the Day #10 - Packing Your Gear

If you're like most, you've put off packing until the day before you leave.

It's a great idea to pack everything yourself.

Mom and Dad can help gather everything on the equipment list but you should do the packing,

That way you know what you have and where everything is.

Pack securely so nothing is lost or separated.

Be sure and put your name and Troop number on everything...that way if someone finds it, they know where to return it.

These related tips come from Mr. Al Hellaby:

"Things get miss placed at camp. Leave the valuable stuff at home. Game boys, jewelry, High tech items.

Adults should put spare key to their vehicle some were on the out side of the vehicle should they loose their key. It has happened.

Also leave your wallet and check book in the glove box. Get a second wallet to carry a minimum of cash and not run the risk of loosing everything.

Boys should bring their spending money in smaller bills and not large ones that will be hard to exchange."

Massawepie Tip of the Day #9 - Uniforms

A uniform sets a standard to be met, promotes group spirit and a sense of identity. It also designates equality among members of the group.

The Scout uniform (aka "Class A") is appropriate dress any time during the week, and is especially encouraged for evening meals and required at the camp evening flag ceremony and Troop group photo.

The "Class A" uniform consists of:
Scout shirt (short sleeve)
Neckerchief and slide
Scout shorts/pants w/Scout belt
Scout socks

The "Class B" uniform, or activity uniform for the Troop is a black t-shirt(Scouts) and the black collared shirt(leaders) with the Troop 140 BSA insignia imprinted in gold.
If you ordered a new "Class B" shirt and would like to pick it up before Saturday, please call me to make arrangements.

For insurance purposes, the Scout Class A uniform should be worn when traveling by vehicle to and from a Scouting event such as summer camp.

For this reason, please arrive at the Legion on Saturday, July 19th by 7:30am wearing your Class A uniform.

Massawepie Tip of the Day #8 - Camp Mail

"Mail Call!"

When you're away at camp there is no better feeling when you receive a letter or "care" package from home.

Mail takes at least two-three days to reach camp and get properly distributed. With this in mind, we found the following mailing practices will ensure your Scout gets his deliveries:

Begin sending mail/packages on Wednesday, July 16th or Thursday, July 17th.

Stop sending packages by Tuesday, July 22nd

and mail by Wednesday July 23nd

All mail MUST have a Troop number on it.

Getting mail from your Scout is essential also. Don't forget to send him off to camp with a couple of SASEs.

Massawepie Tip of the Day #7 - Food in Site

Camp critters LOVE snacks.

If they smell something...even an empty candy wrapper...they will chew through ANYTHING to find it.

Even worse, they tell ALL their friends.

To prevent getting up close and personal with the wildlife at camp, do not keep snacks and wrappers in your gear and tents. There is always a danger of a Scout or leader being injured by an animal.

Camp policy states "Absolutely NO food or food remains may be kept in your site."

It's okay to bring snacks to camp, Mom and Dad can mail snacks to camp, you can even buy snacks at the Trading Post. Any food will be secured in the Troop trailer.

Massawepie Tip of the Day #6 - Kodak Moments

Another great thing about summer camp is all the stuff you can take photos of.

Chipmunks...the lake at sunset...weird bugs...goofy pictures of your friends.

Disposable/recyclable cameras are an essential item to bring to camp.

Most have about 27 exposures per camera...you might want to bring two.

I found a camera that takes digital pics. it's called the

Kodak Plus Digital One-Time-Use Camera. You get prints AND a picture CD.

Shop around...there are plenty of similar items at reasonable prices.

ALSO...Don't forget to bring $8.00 for the Troop Group photo.

Bringing electronic devices to camp is discouraged...you do so at your own risk. Things will get wet, dropped, or misplaced. The Troop is not responsible for damaged or missing items.

Massawepie Tip of the Day #5 - Homesickness

Homesickness at Scout camp is as common as bugs.

95% of children between the ages of 8 and 16 who attend summer camp, experience some feelings of homesickness on at least one day. 20% of those experience moderate to severe feelings of homesickness.

Not to worry! The adult Troop leadership has the experience to recognize the tell-tale signs of homesickness and what to do to help Scouts adjust to camp.

Here is a brief list of things parents can do to help minimize homesickness:

-- Share stories of the positive things you did at camp as a child.

-- Avoid saying things like " I don't know what I'll do without you" or "I hope I remember to feed your dog."

-- Have a No-Call policy. Cell phones are great but calling home is not a treatment for homesickness. 5% of phone calls have no effect and the rest have a negative effect. Leave the cell phone home.

-- Have them bring self-addressed, stamped envelopes from home to write letters to Mom and Dad.

-- Express to your son, the confidence you have in his abilities to cope with feelings of homesickness.

Your son may experience some anxiety or sadness at camp, but he'll have the support of trusted adults and older Scouts at Camp.

Massawepie Tip of the Day #4 - The Buddy System

While at camp we will be using the Buddy System.

It is an important way for Scouts to look after one another, especially while exploring camp.

It's a helpful way we keep track of each other...it's a way of sharing the good times and avoiding the bad.
It is also Boy Scout Tenderfoot rank requirement # 9. Explanation can be found in your Handbook.

Also: If you haven't already...now is a good time to choose a tent buddy. Two Scouts per tent.

This includes the adult leaders as well.

Massawepie Tip of the Day #1 - Footwear

If you need new hiking boots/trail shoes for camp, now is the time to get them and to break them in.

Give yourself a good week of walking around in them.

It's good idea to bring two pairs of shoes...sneakers...boots...trail shoes.

We might also have an opportunity to play soccer...if you have cleats, bring them if you like.

Remember...to avoid foot/toe injuries...open-toed sandals are not allowed at camp.

Where: Allegany State Park (Salamanca, NY)

When: Friday, June 6^th to Sunday, June 8^th

Who: ALL members of Boy Scout Troop 140

Why: To have fun, explore, and CAMP!

o Visit Rock City Park in Olean – a cool park with lots of huge rock formations (big as houses) and caves. This part of NY State was not covered with glaciers during the ice age so the geology is different than our area.

o Mini-Golf in the afternoon

o Morning and evening exploring Allegany State Park (hiking, biking (there are bike trails near the camp ground)

* Sunday June 8^th

o Breakfast

o Return to Rochester around 1:00pm

* Cost is TBD (Approx. $20 per person, covers food, site rental, and admission fees)

The Lighthouse District Klondike Derby is this Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008
Please meet at the Legion parking lot at 7:30 AM.
We'll put together carpools and leave promptly for Greece Canal Park on Elmgrove Road.
Please remember to dress warmly, bring your own mug, a snack and water.
The weather may change throughout the day, it might be a good idea to bring extra socks and a layer or two.

In Memoriam
Former Troop 140 Scoutmaster Mr. Jere Hoth
passed away on Saturday, Jan 19, 2008 after a long battle with MS. We would like to express our deepest respect and gratitiude for his unselfish and dedicated service to the Scouting youth of this community. We would like to extend our sincerest condolences to his wife Karen, his children Eric, Melinda and Catherine and to all his grandchildren. He served the Troop as Asst. Scoutmaster from 1978 to 1980 and Scoutmaster in 1981 and 1982.

The ceremony will honor Steven, Mark and Nick. The guest speaker will be WC Athletic Director Mr. Thomas Dooling.

Please plan on gathering around 9:30am for the 10am ceremony. FULL CLASS A UNIFORMS including your Merit Badge sash. Please NO jeans, camos or swishy pants. Reception and refreshments to follow.

Orienteering Results:
Third Place - Yellow Course
Thomas Hartley, Greg Arlauckas, and Mr. A, representing Troop 140, placed THIRD in the Yellow (Intermediate) Course at the ROC Orienteering Meet. The Meet was held on Sunday, November 4 at Oatka Creek Park, west of Scottsville. They polished off the 1.96 km (1.2 mi.) course in 17:44 minutes. They held on to first place for most of the day and were the time to beat. They competed with 34 other teams and individuals including other Boy Scout Troops, Girl Scouts, high schools and seasoned regulars.

Orienteering at Oatka Creek Park on Sunday

Excellent opportunity to practice
your Map & Compass skills.

The next ROC meet will be on Sunday, Nov 4 at Oatka Creek
Park, just west of  Scottsville. Starts from Noon to 2:00pm.

There will be three courses. The WHITE is 1.5 Km (.93 mi.)with 6
controls. The YELLOW has 7 controls and is 2.5 Km (1.55 mi.)
long. The ORANGE has 13 controls and is 4.8 Km (2.98 mi.) in
length. Fee is $6.00 ($3.00 for ROC members)

pick-up and results typing. Also the trail run is

A Message from Mr. Mike Smith,
Cubmaster of Pack 140

I received this thank you note from Mr. Smith who asked that I send it along.

"I’d like to say thank you to all of the Den leaders, parents, guests, the Boy Scouts and Leaders of Troops 372 and 140 for all of the help at our Pack meeting held at the Oatka Creek Park this past weekend. A tremendous effort was put in by all of us to make the event happen. We had over 80 parents, guests and scouts participating with nearly the same eating dinner that evening. Nearly half of the group stayed for the overnight sleepover as well! Marissa and Sandy prepared most of the breakfast to feed the hungry and grumpy masses the next morning, while the rest of the group cleaned up the campsite.

The parent participation was the “cherry on top”. Without all of the help from each of you – the leaders, including myself, wouldn’t have been able to fulfill our planned agenda.

There will be a Troop meeting at 2:00pm at Oatka Creek Park. Meet at the pavilion. We will be helping the Cub Scout Pack with tie-dying, apple catapults, games and where ever else we're needed.
Please come prepared to help and have fun. Dinner will be provided by the Pack. Dessert will feature Dump Cake made by the Webelos II scouts, followed by a campfire.

After this event we will be camping out overnight at the Stollery Property on Quaker Road. Please remember to bring your own gear.

TROOP 140 NEWS

A lot of things have happened since last May.

We have two new Eagle Scouts, Steven Drexler and Mark Hellaby. They join Eagle Scout Nick Matson. Details can be found by following the Troop 140 link on the right.

Leadership Changes

Mrs. Susan Drexler, our Troop Committee Chair has passed her duties onto Mr. Al Hellaby who will be taking over in her spot. We wish her all the best and would like to thank her for all her help, support and guidance over the past several years.

At the Troop Court of Honor on Monday, September 24, Mr. Al Hellaby announced that I am the new Scoutmaster. I'm looking forward to serving the unit in that capacity. Over the next few days and weeks, I will be outlining a plan for the year which I hope to include even more activities. I'm also looking for suggestions for a Spring 2008 camping trip. Last year it was Howe's Caverns/Cooperstown, and in 2006 we visited the Gettysburg National Battlefield. You can send your suggestions to me via email.

Our next scheduled meeting will be Monday, October 8 at 7:00pm-Legion. We will be planning and discussing our participation in the Pack 140 event on Saturday, October 13 at Oatka Creek Park. We will also hold SPL elections and assign youth leader positions. This meeting is mandatory.

Boy Scout Troop 140 Eagle Scout Project

On Saturday, June 9th, a small group of available scouts, scouters, and friends spent a nice sunny Saturday recently working on Steven D's Eagle project. The project focused on repairing and reroofing the two soccer dugouts at Wheatland-Chili H.S. in Scottsville.

There are other projects currently being created to benefit the community.

Klondike Derby Awards Ceremony

The Black Creek District Klondike Derby awards ceremony will be held on Wednesday, March 7th at 7:00pm in the Wheatland-Chili High School cafeteria as part of the monthly BSA Roundtable program. All participating troops are encouraged to send at least two representatives (one of which must be the SPL) to collect your awards and/or Event Patches.

Black Creek District Klondike Derby News

"Bob and Mark" are BACK!

The BCD Klondike will be held Saturday, February 17th at Oatka Creek Park in the town of Wheatland. Scottsville Troop 140 has graciously accepted the role of event host and is currently pursuing a troop to help co-host. This annual event is open to all registered Boy Scouts and second-year Webelos Scouts. An event patch and lunch is included in the registration fee.

Join Troops from all over Black Creek District for a fun-filled day of teamwork, problem solving, fire building, cooking, compass work, knots and lashings, first aid skills, and woods tools. Special events for the day include a Snow Sculpture Contest, a Midway filled with displays, demonstrations, and hands-on activities.

A Message from Scoutmaster Mr. Alan Hellaby...

"Good Morning Everyone,

With the soccer season now over, and what a great season it was...making it all the way to the State finals, it's time to kick the Scout program into high gear.

There is a meeting planned for tonight, December 4th at 7:00 PM at the Legion. There is also a committee meeting on Saturday the 9th at 8:00 AM followed by a meeting at 10:00 AM.

Things we need to address right away are:
* Registration - $10.00 for the year as the Charter is due next week.
* You need to reserve your spot for Summer camp at Massawepie. We will be attending week 4 once again , which is July 22nd through July 28th. A deposit of $25.00 is due now to hold your spot.
* Scout ski night at Bristol Mt. is the Tuesday after Christmas.

* We will need to hold our SPL election and...
* Assess dues for the year as well.

Anyone that did not make it to the Court of Honor your badges are in your mail folder. I have placed camp photos and advancement records in everyone's folders as well.

As I mentioned we will be working with a reduced schedule this year and will be concentrating on Eagle required merit badges."

WC Wildcats Win Class C Soccer Championship

Congratulations to Troop 140 Scouts Mark, Nick, and Greg for winning the Section V Boys Soccer Championship.
The Wildcats defeated Pavilion, 2-0 to take the Class C crown. This is the first Championship win since 1994.

The campout scheduled for October 28-29 has been postponed due to the forecast for bad weather and the Wheatland-Chili Boys Soccer Sectional game on Saturday. Stay tuned for the new date. This event will most likely be moved from lean-to camping to lodge camping. A "Father/Son" campout was suggested.

A Message From Scoutmaster Al Hellaby

"Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone had a GREAT summer. Now that fall is in the air and we gave you all a little extra time to get settled back into the school routine, it is time to start thinking Scouts. Our first meeting of the season is October 23rd at 7:00 PM. We are going to start out the year with a Court of Honor, so everyone can get those merit badges from summer camp. Also if there are any of you ready to advance you will need to get to me before the end of this week so there is time to schedule a Board of Review. We will also discuss this coming year's calendar as we have cut back the number of meetings due to the fact most all of your advancement will be based on merit badge work.

There is a Merit Badge University planned for Saturday, November 4. If you are interested you need to let me know ASAP as classes are filling up fast. I am hoping to get some of our committee members to run a class or two that day so there will be more space for everyone who wants to participate. Activities scheduled for the month of October will include a Court of Honor and an Overnighter.

A Court of Honor will be held Monday night, Oct. 23. The awards ceremony will include rank advancement and Merit Badges earned over the Summer at Massawepie. Boy Scout Troop 140 Eagle Scout Project

A small group of available scouts, scouters, and friends spent a few weekends recently, working on Mark H.'s Eagle project. The project focused on repairing and replacing a significant amount of sidewalk at St. Mary's RC Church in Scottsville. The goal of this project was to make the walking surfaces safer and to redirect pedestrian traffic flow.

There are other projects currently being planned to benefit the community.
